Keene, Calif.—Helen Fabela Chavez, 88, who played a vital role helping her husband give birth to what became the first enduring farm workers union in U.S. history—and sustained Cesar Chavez during the 31 years he led the United Farm Workers of America—passed away on Monday, June 6, at a Bakersfield hospital surrounded by many her seven surviving children, 31 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Helen, a humble girl from Delano, used her fierce determination to help change the lives of thousands of farm workers and millions of others who were inspired by La Causa. Born Helen Fabela on Jan. 21, 1928 in the Imperial Valley town of Brawley, her family lived into a converted horse barn outside McFarland before moving to Delano. She met Cesar in the mid-1940s, they were married in 1948 after his discharge from the U.S. Navy and they had eight children: Fernando, Sylvia, Linda, Eloise, Anna, Paul, Elizabeth and Anthony.
Cesar and Helen left a comfortable middle-class life in East Los Angeles in 1962, and moved back to Delano to begin organizing farm workers. Enduring greats hardship, Helen often had to raise the children by herself while Cesar was on the road. She returned to fieldwork while Cesar organized up and down California’s vast Central Valley; on weekends Cesar and some of the older children joined her.
Quiet and humble but fiercely determined and strong willed, Helen didn’t speak in public or talk with reporters, but she held deep convictions. In September 1965, while members of Cesar’s young Latino union debated whether or not to join a grape strike begun that month by members of a largely Filipino union, Helen in her quiet, no-nonsense way, settled the debate by asking, “Are we a union or not?”
Her consistent humility, selflessness, quiet heroism and fiery perseverance were at the heart of the movement she helped build.

When I was small we were migrant farmworkers. I remember traveling to picking crops in the Midwest. I live here in St. Louis, Missouri and attended St. Louis University where there’s a large Campus Ministry and where I met your great Husband two times who shared about the U.F.W. and we supported the Union from here in many ways. I read your history and I wish I could have met you too. God has a special place for people like you and Cesar and you will forever be in my prayers and will continue mt support for the Union, Thank you.

Around 1975 the Augustinians were privileged to host Caesar and Helen in our Friary in Philadelphia. I had planned on rising early to make sure our guest had coffee and something for breakfast. When I got to the kitchen, Helen was already making coffee and had done the dishes from the night before.

Helen was a powerful, quiet force. I felt so honored to meet her in her home as the UFW considered making me its intellectual property lawyer, and her ok on that was a thrill! I was amazed that year after year she would recognize and acknowledge me at events, even though our time together had been so brief and I was not of great significance to her. It simply showed what an amazing woman she was, and how much compassion and strength she lent to the movement. Her passing is a loss for all who remain, and a singularly poignant one for her family. For the family, I am so sorry for your loss. May your grief be lifted with the knowledge she can finally rest. She is at peace, and well deservedly. She made her incomparable contributions. We who remain must carry on.

We live in an agricultural area (Los Banos, Ca) and we see farmworkers, field workers almost all the time. My kids ask what they are doing out there in the fields and believe me, it sparks up an awesome conversation! A friend of mine has a picture of his grandfather (Dionicio “Chino” Vasquez) and Cesar Chavez in his living room…it’s an honor to even see the picture hanging in his home. May you forever rest in peace..and be together as one with Cesar.

I will cherish all of the times I spent at La Paz and going to Pan y Vino dinners where Gonzalo would make the carne asada and veggie asada and Helen would be there. I would always ask Helen for any stories she had about the early years in the struggle. Rest in Peace Helen.

I taught about Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers when teaching about political activism at San Francisco State – always an inspiring example. Later I learned about Helen – no surprise to find a great woman helping a great man.
My deepest condolences to you . Having picked beans with farm workers back east as a teenager, I felt honored to follow Cesar in a March in San Diego many years later. Your parents were both giants for justice.

My condolences to the Chavez family. I was privileged to meet Helen several times in the early 1970s when I worked on Cesar’s security detail. Helen was always very kind and warm to us even when we were underfoot in her home in Delano and at La Paz. She was a great, strong and caring lady.

I’m so sorry–I never met Helen, but I met Cesar on several occasions–first at a picket line outside a Von’s Pavilion store in East Los Angeles, and then when he spoke to my Union, the United Teachers Los Angeles House of Representatives, of which I was a member for over 15 years. I’d heard him speak numerous times on KPFK, the local Pacifica affiliiat, and was always impressed. I’d purchase a small paperback children’s book about Cesar and his life, which I liked to read the children I taught in LAUSD.
i’m glad Cesar had such a nice, supportive wife and family.I’m sorry they are both gone…please continue the cause..

Thank you Senora Chavez for your strength and your importance in the civil rights movement of the United Farm Workers. I remember Sr. Chavez would be mentioned in a paragraph during history class and I wanted to know more so I would request any books on the struggle and the Chavez family. I was surprised to find that Sr. Chavez was married with a family and that made me never except a paragraph regarding our most notable heroes in history and the abscence of the people who stood them up and carry the strength of the family in order that they could do the jobs they were called to do.

Helen Chavez was one of the unsung heroes of the farm worker movement. Not seeking fame or fortune, she was content for her husband to shine in public. She was dedicated to her family and friends. I remember once she attended a UFW fundraiser in Orange County, CA, where her granddaughter, Christine was speaking. She signed a photograph of herself and Cesar for everyone in the room! What a generous, thoughtful gift. My prayers and sympathy are with each of you, members of this amazing family.
For the Chavez family my condolences. I’m sure it wasn’t easy sharing your parents with the rest of the world, but we were so blessed to have them. The work of your parents inspired my mother and her friends to help the dairy farmers in Pennsylvania unionize when the state milk marketing board nearly bankrupted all the farm families. There presence was a light in the world where there had been darkness. Thank you for sharing them and God bless you all.

We in Seattle were inspired followers of Cesar’s Farm Workers efforts to unionize: we at no lettuce or table grapes, and took part in every street demonstration. My own four small children were at our side: at one street demonstration, my 6-ear-old tugged at my arm : :Mommy! There’s a man up there and he is EATING BOYCOTTS ! And spitting them out at the people ! ” I ran to investigate, and the red neck guy was eating grapes, not boycotters. RIP, brave couple, your labors were successful and enduring forever. Phyllis King

My first awareness was the grape boycott, which I supported in1970.
I stil have problems buying grapes and produce provided by the poor conditiona in that industry.
My friend, Don Taylor, worked with Cesar on trade unions. The group created and sent a beautiful Canadian flag which hung in Don’s home in Don Mills, Ontario.
We were always aware of the strong, support and contributions of his wife, Helen.

During the grape strike, at Christmas time, I and many other members of the organization called Resistance (a non-violent organization opposed to the draft and the war that advocated peace) traveled from Los Angeles to Delano to bring toys to the children of striking farm workers. We were met with love and warmth, and invited to lunch with the workers. It was an amazing and humbling experience. May God bless the UFW, Cesar, and of course Helen.
Helen is now with Cesar in Heaven. Both of them are happier now, although we are sad because we miss them. We can honor their memory by continuing their work. Long live the union! Solidarity forever! Huelga!

I know the struggle of being on strike. I was one of the strikers against Frank Lorenzo’s Eastern Airlines, who also supported mny strikes against unfair and unacceptable working conditions like the United Farm Workers Union. I shall keep you in my prayers and thoughts now that your mother and father have once again been joined in the afterlife. May peace find you and keep you in its protective and soothing arms.

My name is Virginia Wheaton and I grew up in Delano during the grape strike days of the ’60s and ’70s, The Chavez family and their efforts to achieve financial and racial equality for our farm workers has had a profound impact on my life. One of my first political acts was to join with other (mostly minority) students to demand that Freddie Chavez be elected as student body president of Delano High School. (Hi, Freddie! We lost touch but I hope life has brought you many roses.) The understanding I gathered from my years in Delano greatly sensitized me and has brought me to the place I am today, Board Member of the Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center (ourpeacecenter.org) in Walnut Creek, CA, and longtime editor of their newsletter, Peace Gazette. Thank you, Helen Chavez, for my own growth and for speeding evolution of humanity, as we learn to care for those who bring us food. How backwards our society is where we have to learn to respect the food-producers! Still so much work to be done, to build on what you have accomplished, and pull this nation forward.

My name is Lucile Wheaton. I am now 94 years old, but will never forget (and that is saying a lot, these days) the Chavez family, UFWOC, and the early organizing days in Delano. I was very much a part of the established elite, wife of a doctor, president of PTA, but when I invited Caesar to speak at a PTA luncheon, my life changed. Besides being ostracized, something I had never experienced, I became politicized. I was so impressed with the California Rural Legal Association, that at age 50 I completed college and went to the law school at UCLA, and spent the last 15 years of my professional life running the Juvenile Public Defenders Dept in Fresno County. I was nicknamed ‘ No deal Lucile’ since I never pleaded a case unless it was in the child’s best interest. Without the influence of the Chavez family, I might never have discovered my true calling. Thank you, Helen! The sacrifices you and your family have made will be long remembered and appreciated.

As a long time elementary school teacher, the curriculum that is required, more often than not, expects to mold students into being ridiculously and, at times, obnoxiously outspoken in order to be successful. But as a first generation Chicana college grad raised by a stay at home mom who, like Helen, is humble and strong, yet always “behind the scenes,” I have been a witness that our proud Raza can and has accomplished much with education, yet being true to who we essentially are. Steadfastness, strong sense of self, and a quiet spirit can also speak volumes in demonstrating “We shall not be moved!” Thank you Helen for your outstanding example of support–for your husband, as well as for La Causa–and love, showing us that we all have varied, special gifts that when utilized for the greater good, entonces “¡Sí Se Puede!”
Helen was always warm and friendly whenever we met both during and after my years with the UFW. She was in many ways the heart of the movement, and her heart was strong as well as loving and compassionate. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the extended Chavez family.

I was honored to meet Cesar when I was a student at San Jose State in the 70’s. It doesn’t surprise me to learn there was a wise, strong women urging him on.
I met Cesar when I was a seminarian in the 1970’s at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA, and he came to speak. SI, SE PUEDE is still the guiding principle of the UFW, but Cesar could not have done so without the strength that Helen gave him throughout their lives together. And now, they are together again, this time forever.
It is with great respect that I offer my condolences to the Chavez family. Mrs. Chavez has left her footprint for others to follow. The legacy that she and Cesar leave behind is immeasurable. As a teacher, I thank you for your contributions/your voice. God has a special place for you in heaven.

my condolences to the Chavez family, our family went through with the farm worker struggle in the salinas valley , I want to thank this amazing family for all the work they did it really made a difference on our life as farm workers. My father at age 78 is the oldest lettuce worker and is very thankful to Cesar Chavez, and all who supported his cause like Mrs Chavez and all the wonderful people who helped

My husband and I always stop by La Paz to saludar Cesar’s resting place on our way to and from Nuevo Mejico, now we’ll stop by to say thank you to both of them for all their personal sacrifices that they made for our very hard working gente. As a little boy I can only remember 2 summers working in the fields with my family. At age 17 I worked for my uncle in Firebaugh and saw first hand the plight of the Mexican farm worker. I remember thinking, “Who is going to right the wrongs?” How excited I was when Cesar and Helen Chavez stepped up to the plate, and even more enthusiastic for their success when I found out we were “parientes”. I supported their boycots and have rooted for them ever since. As my mother, Dolores Chavez Arvizu, would have said: “Mi mas sentido pesame, familia Chavez. Helen, que descanses en paz. Lo mereces.”
May the United Farm Workers Union thrive for many many years, advancing the cause of farm workers nationwide!

From the other side of the country, here in New England, one heart pauses to honour a remarkable lady. Mr. Chavez was a childhood hero of mine. I hope that he and Mrs. Chavez will now be able to be together again, and that those of the Chavez family who must remain behind here a while longer will find comfort and solace in each other and from the thoughts and prayers sent their way from so many, including me. I am a person of no particular account, but I will include your mother/grandmother/great-grandmother in my prayers before the statue of Mary during my next visit to the cathedral in my town. What beautiful and moving testimonies about the life and legacy of Helen! Two memories I hold with appreciation: 1) Helen’s signature on the Octavio Ocampo portrait of Cesar after she cooked me and companion breakfast at Keene in June 2001, and 2) Helen’s putting a turquoise rosary in the hands of deceased UFW cook whose service took place in ELA. We’ve always loved and supported Cesar and Helen in their undying commitment to further the cause. Helen will be dearly missed by myself and my family. As a son of former farmworkers, (my wife’s parents included), we believe unionization of all farm, dairy, etc., workers is of the uptmost importance.
